HEAD COACH James Dickey
"I told our guys that I'm really happy that we won; now let's get ready for Tulane. I was pleased with the way we came out. Our defense was good for the majority of the game. Our 3-point defense has to continue to improve. We have to have more awareness. We had some guys that played well. Jimmie Jones gave us a great lift in the first half.
In the second half, our defense became a bit soft. We weren't as active in attacking as we should be."
On guard Joseph Young
"He played the way that we envisioned him playing. He took really good shots, made some 3s and had some mid-range shots. He had a nice up and under, penetrating pitch to TaShawn Thomas for a dunk. He is starting to mature in understanding how we want him to play the game. He played a little tentative defensively, but offensively he really understands. He understands how his game can evolve beyond being a 3-point shooter. He had a great game as far as balance is concerned.
On Jimmie Jones
"Guys like playing with Jimmie. He's a pass-first guy. He knows what his role is."
On being satisfied with the way they finished the first half.
"I would have liked to have scored that last basket, but I was pleased. For us, it's about consistency. We expected to win this game. Our guys came out ready. Our defense was really good early on. We didn't give up too many points, but I was glad when we built up that lead toward0 the end of the first half."
On the team's improvement
"Our guys are starting to understand how they've got to play. The coaches really work hard in trying to get them to understand what the other teams are going to try to do defensively and how we need to attack. It's more about how we play than how the other team does."
On Kirk Van Slyke not playing
"There was no reason. Leon (Gibson) played very well at Marshall and practiced well. Kirk didn't do anything wrong. There was no reason other than the matchup situations."
FRESHMAN FORWARD TaShawn Thomas
On the team's confidence in Joseph Young
"We all know that Joe can score. We try to get him open shots by attacking the gaps and attacking his man to get him open. We have a lot of confidence in Joe."
On taking the charge late in the game
"It goes back to practice. We do the take charge and dive on the ground drill every day. It becomes automatic."
On guarding SMU's Robert Nyakundi
"He is a talented player. We would get a hand up, and he was still able to knock the 3-pointer down. We did not get out there fast enough to discourage the shot."
FRESHMAN GUARD Joseph Young
On his role in the game tonight
"My teammates were attacking the gap and did a good job of finding me open. I just had to be ready and knock down the shot."
On finally getting into a rhythm this season
"It is a tough task to sit out a year. I am getting into a rhythm as each game goes by."
On taking over the game tonight
"We haven't been finishing the half off. Coach (Dickey) told us we needed a stop before the half and needed to score. We got a stop and went in the locker room and talked about it. We got our confidence up and came back out and overcame adversity and played the game."
On teammate Jimmie Jones
"He picked us up on defense. We needed the guard on top to help us out in the back and to get the steals. It was a big lift on defense."
