HOUSTON - UAB used a big run early and never looked back in taking a 68-55 win against the University of Houston men's basketball team Saturday evening inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars jumped out to a 6-4 lead early, but the Blazers used a 23-4 run over the next six minutes to build a lead they would never relinquish. UAB took advantage of some long-range shooting during the rally, connecting on five of their nine 3-pointers in the game during that time.

Houston trimmed that deficit to 38-24 by the halftime break, but the Blazers erupted on a 13-2 run to start the second half to take control of the game. With the loss, the Cougars fell to 12-15 overall and 4-10 in C-USA games. UAB improved to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in C-USA play.

Senior forward Maurice McNeil led the Cougars with 14 points and added six rebounds, while sophomore forward Kendrick Washington came off the bench to post 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Senior guard Zamal Nixon added 11 points with two rebounds and a team-high five assists. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native also went 4-of-4 from the free throw line and has hit 25 of his last 26 tries from the charity stripe.

UAB guard Jamarr Sanders led all players with 18 points, including a game-high four 3-pointers, while Ovie Soko and Preston Purifoy posted 17 points apiece. Anthony Criswell added 10 rebounds, while Aaron Johnson added 10 assists in the win.

The Cougars head to New Orleans to meet league-rival Tulane at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Fogelman Arena.

From there, the team closes out the regular season when it plays host to crosstown-rival Rice at 5 p.m., Saturday, in Hofheinz Pavilion. That game will be part of a doubleheader with the Cougar women's team, which meets Tulane at 2 p.m., Saturday.
