HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On Robert McKiver's 52-point game
"When a player of mine has an opportunity to do something special, particularly when it's a kid who works as hard as Robert McKiver, it's very satisfying for me because no one has worked harder than him. He's in here working on his game every night until 1a.m. or 2 am. You love to see kids like that have nights like this."
On the Cougar's upcoming schedule
"We're 21-6 now, and we have three regular season games to go. And they're all must wins if we have any hopes of reaching the tournament. We need to finish off these next three regular-season games and then we'll worry about the conference tournament after that. We need to finish this off. We are on the road now. I don't care who you are playing. The toughest thing to do late in the season is to win on the road; it's very difficult. We have been playing well on the road this year, but we need to get it done."
On Robert McKiver's offensive output
"He's our horse to ride. If I have Earl Campbell, I'm not going to be throwing 30-yard passes."
On the Cougar's NCAA Tournament hopes
"We just have to keep winning. Tonight, Joe Lunardi on ESPN said that right now we are one of the last four teams in the tournament. That was tonight before the game. We usually don't tell the players that, but I thought why not since they haven't really mentioned us yet. That means that in his opinion we would be one of the 64 or one of the 34 at-large bid teams. That means we are in the conversation but now we need to take care of business and win. We are in March playing pressure basketball, and that's fun."
"I was feeling good tonight. I hit some 3's tonight but I had to realize that I had to take the ball to the basket. I think that was the key. They were pressing up on me and denying the wings so I knew the lane would be open. I just had to take the ball to the basket and finish strong."
"That's my teammates. They love me. They all wanted to see me make it but it's really not about the 52 points or the time I had 41. I just really want to make the NCAA tournament so bad that when I'm out there my motor just gets going because I just want to make it there so bad."
On Approaching 50 Points
"I wasn't really thinking about it. When I get it going I'm just in a zone. My teammates were telling me that I had this amount but I really don't think about my point total. I knew when I had 47 because my teammates started talking to me but before then I didn't know."
On Being In The Zone
"I work so hard that I just feel like it's just the hard work paying off. I cant get complacent after this. I have to keep it going. My teammates really believe in me even when I might not score when they pass me the ball. They believe in me out there and that's what gets me going. They look at me as their leader."
On Breaking Larry Bird's Hofheinz Pavilion-Scoring Record
"No, I didn't know that. It's a big honor. A lot of people don't realize how much tradition our school has. Not to sound corny, but we've had so many greats to play here. Otis Birdsong, Elvin Hayes, Clyde Drexler, Albert Franklin, Hakeen Olajuwon all played here. We have a lot of tradition here and I feel honored to have a record like that."
On His Bucket Eclipsing The 50-Point Plateau
"It was crazy. My teammates and I were emotional. It felt great. That was probably the best feeling in my life.
On UH's NCAA Tournament Hopes
"I feel like we just have to when the rest of our games. That's the key, we have to win out but take it one game at a time. Forget about this game and move on to the next one."
