HOUSTON HEAD COACH James Dickey
"What Stan (Heath) and his team are going through is a tough situation. For them to come in here where they've lost six in a row, and how they lost at Rutgers, they played. It's a testament to his coaching, his staff and their players. They played extremely hard. (Victor) Rudd was terrific. He had 26 points at Rutgers and 25 tonight. They didn't do anything surprising.
For whatever reason, we were not ready to play. Our guys wanted to be ready to play. I know they wanted to win this game bad for their teammates and the seniors and for building the conference record. We weren't as sharp as we needed to be. That's not taking anything away from them. In the second half, these two guys right here (Danuel House and L.J. Rose) really took over and made big plays.
On needing to get to the free throw line more
"We got there 12 times in the second half. Had we got there like we should have in the first half, we would have been there like we have been 22-24 times. We're a good free throw shooting team. The guys know that we're better when we get there. We got in a situation in the first half where we got up, and we started settling for jump shots. We can shoot the ball, but when it's not falling you have to run a little more offense. We didn't get to the free throw line enough in the first half."
On the play of Houston guards Danuel House and L.J. Rose
Both of them had five assists apiece. That really speaks volumes about their mentality in the second half in terms of team. Finding the open man. They did a good job sharing the ball.
On not being able to put South Florida away until the end of the game
"The inability comes from not being able to get multiple stops at the other end. When you have a lead there are three things that have to happen. One, you go down and turn the ball over. We had too many turnovers tonight. Two you go down, shoot it and miss it, and three you don't get multiple stops on the other end. When we analyze the film we'll see those three things will rear its ugly head. When you get someone down you just continue to do what you've been doing. Be efficient offensively, take care of the ball, and get multiple stops. We didn't do that."
On the team's rebounding
We've challenged our wings to rebound better. TaShawn (Thomas) didn't rebound well tonight. J.J. (Richardson) had five defensive rebounds. We had two situations on free throw box outs where we didn't box out. We just didn't get the rebound. We have to go look at those. We have to pinch properly. When you're by yourself you have to get your man, and we have to get the shooter. That's communication."
HOUSTON SOPHOMORE GUARD L.J. Rose
On the importance of getting the last few wins with the conference tournament coming up
"Well we've won three in a row and we talked in the locker room, so we knew we couldn't have a letdown. We felt like this game was the only thing that could stop us from reaching our goal. Now we just have to get ready for Central Florida and gain some momentum going into the tournament."
HOUSTON SOPHOMORE GUARD Danuel House
On the effort to get rebounds late in the game
"Well I just knew that my team needed rebounds to finalize the defensive stops. So the coaches told us to go get the rebounds, my job was to do that, and then to outlet it to L.J. (Rose)."
