2008-09 Houston Cougars Men's Basketball Postgame Quotes
SMU Mustangs (9-20 3-13 C-USA) at Houston Cougars (19-10 10-6 C-USA)
Saturday, March 7, 2009 Hofheinz Pavilion Houston, Texas
HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On the game
"It was an exciting offensive display I thought by both teams and it seemed like both teams had a hard time stopping the other. Whether it was in the zone that they were playing, man to man or whatever we were switching up our coverage. They did a really good job moving the ball and knocking down three-pointers. If we could only do that in other game, but that is how basketball is crazy."
On the offensive rhythm.
"We're moving the ball really well and hitting the open man for the most part. Aubrey (Coleman) struggled in the first half and he still ends up with 22 points. I was ready to tell him to go take a shower, then he gets hotter than a five-dollar pistol. It's good to see Kelvin still in rhythm. He was big. Of course, Zamal Nixon contributed. He's capable of that every single night. He's improved tremendously, he's more in control and he is a great rhythm shooter. Zamal played an outstanding core game. That is a much better SMU team that we've played in the past couple of years even though the record might not reflect that. Because we respect them, we didn't overlook them. Our kids knew how dangerous they were.
"We didn't feel like our kids were pressing or were in a hurry tonight. Offense is played best when you're relaxed. When you get in a hurry and you rush, you make mistakes. We were able to stay in rhythm even though they did some things to throw us off."
On Marcus Cousin
"Marcus played well but he just got in foul trouble. Marcus was active tonight; he had fight, but just got in foul trouble. We need him. Some nights, Marcus matches up with certain guys and Nick Mosley with others and we know that. Now that we have the confidence in Nick, I will not be afraid to go to the bench in the tournament."
HOUSTON SOPHOMORE GUARD Zamal Nixon
On feeling his shot tonight
"I took a lot of the blame for the Memphis loss. I wasn't as productive that I've should've been. I just tried to get them up tonight. I think if I had this kind of performance in the Memphis game it would've been a "W" in our column."
On the team total of 20 assists
"We just wanted to get everybody involved. I think that's when we are at our best when everybody is getting touches. I think that was one of our best performances when we have everybody touching the ball. If we can just keep that up going into the (C-USA) tournament we should be able to go real far."
On how important to get the offense on track heading into the C-USA Conference Tournament:
"That's big because we need something to build on going into the tournament. With us having a performance like this tonight, hopefully we can carry it over the next few games in the tournament."
HOUSTON JUNIOR GUARD Aubrey Coleman
On his second half performance:
"It's just like the UAB game and I just picked it up in the second half. It was good to see my teammates were scoring like Qa'rraan (Calhoun), Kelvin (Lewis), and Zamal (Nixon) everybody putting in that effort offensively. That has to be our key to winning. We have to stop taking those bad shots like we did against Memphis. We know we have to share the ball. Going into the tournament we have to play smart. If nobody has a good shot, they need to pass to someone who has one. Everybody was confident tonight that's why we were swinging it and sharing it."
