2008-09 Houston Cougars Men's Basketball Postgame Quotes
2009 College Basketball Invitational First Round
Houston Cougars (21-12 10-6 C-USA) at Oregon State Beavers (14-17 7-11 Pac-10)
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 Gill Coliseum Corvallis, Ore.
HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On the game overall
"We held them to a low shooting percentage until very late in the basketball game. I am really proud of these kids, and that is all I can say. It is tough to go on the road, even regular season, and in post season it's very difficult. It was a great experience for our kids, for our two seniors, and all the kids we will have back next year. This game tonight was good for us; it was good for our kids. It will be something that will help motivate them for next year."
On the lack of shots made during the second half
"We were trying to get the ball to the big guy inside, we got the ball to Cousin a couple times, they were letting us play and it was physical inside, but he couldn't hold on to a couple of loose balls. During some set-ups we were trying to post him, but their defense was excellent and they are an excellent defensive team. Like I said before the game, this team beat Cal twice, Stanford twice and this team beat USC, so this is a good basketball team. They play a different style than I prefer and it's tough to play. You have to be a little more efficient and shoot the ball better to win this game."
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH CRAIG ROBINSON
"I was not sure about that one for awhile. It is good for these guys to get into tournament play, playing a new opponent. It is great for the program; it is great for those guys in the locker room, great for the staff and great for the university. We are really excited about this."
On the first half
"I wasn't sure if they were going to come out and make the shots because psychologically it was too much pressure being in this tournament, but the guys fooled me once again, and they came out in the second half and were very confident. I was happy to see that. Our execution was good. We missed a few shots, but everything we tried to do was like boom-boom got it, layup, or boom-boom got it, wide open shot. I felt like if they started to fall, we would be ok."
On the second half
"We saw something that was available and guys just executed it. We didn't have time to go over it at halftime, we just talked about it, and those guys came out and executed it brilliantly. The thing I am most proud of with these guys is their defense. This is a team that averages 80 points a game, and we got them down to 45. The second thing was, we said we had to impose our will, which was our way of saying control the tempo, which we did. They played right into our hand."
OREGON FORWARD DANIEL DEANE
On offensive change in the second half
"We came out and the 1-3-1 put us on our heels; but we got aggressive and came back."
On having a good offensive night
"My team-mates found me well at the post. After I got a few buckets guys started cutting and they got some layups and Omari [Johnson] hit some shots which opened some things up."
OREGON FORWARD OMARI JOHNSON
On hitting two three-pointers late
"Coach put me over on one side because they only play one man up top so I would be wide open and I would spot up and shoot."
On offensive game
"I just had a good shooting week in practice. I've been going hard in practice getting more shots up. It worked out for me."
On winning the game
"It felt pretty good coming off our little losing streak to finish the season. Makes us feel about how we finish this season. We feel like we can win this season."
