HOUSTON -- University of Houston senior guard Damyean Dotson poured in 23 points to lead all players, while junior guard Rob Gray Jr., added 22 points as the Cougars rolled to a 94-67 win over UNC Pembroke in an exhibition contest inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Saturday night.
Competing against the alma mater of Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars connected on 50 percent of their 60 shots from the field and limited the Braves to only 34.5 percent, including 30.0 percent in the first half. The Cougars also outrebounded the Braves 53-25 with 19 offensive boards.
The Cougars raced out to a 17-7 lead through the first seven minutes, but the Braves took advantage of Houston turnovers to score the next nine points and moved to within 17-16 when Akia Pruitt sank a layup with 11:25 remaining.
However, the Cougars erupted on a 12-2 run over the next five minutes and never led by fewer than seven points the rest of the way.
After taking a 42-29 lead into the locker room at the break, the Cougars used a 17-2 rally to start the second half and eventually built as much as a 31-point lead midway through the second half.
Dotson, who was a 2016 Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team honoree, was a steady force for the Cougars throughout the game. The Houston native and Yates High School product connected on 7-of-10 shots from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
Dotson also grabbed eight rebounds with an assist and steal while hitting all four free throw tries.
Gray, who was a Preseason Second-Team selection and enters this season as the American Athletic Conference's leading returning scorer, drained three treys in the win and hit all but one of his 10 free throw ties. The Forest City, N.C., native also grabbed two rebounds with two assists and three steals.
Making his first appearance in the Scarlet and White, junior forward Devin Davis scored 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and led all players with nine rebounds. The Midland Junior College product also dished out three assists with three steals.
Andrew Evans led UNC Pembroke with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added a game-high six steals, while Pruitt finished with 14 points and four rebounds.

Single game tickets begin at only $12 for American Athletic Conference games and $10 for non-conference games.
The Cougars open their regular-season schedule when they play host to Morgan State at 7 p.m., Friday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
From there, the Cougars compete in their second exhibition contest of the year when they meet Angelo State at 7 p.m., Nov. 16, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
