HOUSTON - University of Houston Men's Basketball frontcourt stars Nura Zanna and Chris Harris Jr. posted 13 points apiece to lead a balanced attack as the Cougars claimed a 97-80 win over Angelo State in an exhibition inside Health & PE Arena.
Houston, which previously knocked off No. 24 Baylor in late October in a Hurricane Harvey Relief exhibition, jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the eight minutes and never led by fewer than nine points the rest of the way.
Making their Houston debuts, Zanna and Harris were part of a Cougar frontcourt, which outrebounded the Rams 50-26 with 19 offensive boards. The Cougars connected on 52.9 percent (36-of-68) of their shots in the game, including a blistering 60.0 percent in the first half, and added six 3-pointers on the way to a 53-27 halftime lead.
Zanna connected on 4-of-6 shots from the field and grabbed five rebounds, while Harris connected on 3-of-5 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line with seven rebounds.
Twelve Cougars scored in the victory with Zanna and Harris topping five players in double digits. Sophomore guard Armoni Brooks finished with 12 points, thanks to four 3-pointers on only five attempts, while senior forward Devin Davis and senior guard Wes VanBeck totaled 10 points each.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman forward Fabian White Jr. nearly finished with a double-double, totaling seven points with a team-high game-high nine rebounds and two assists.
Angelo State's James Kirksey came off the bench to lead all players with 18 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Kiair Crouch added 16 points with a team-high three 3-pointers, while forward Will Adler and guard Ja'Michael Brown each finished with 10 points.
The Cougars open the regular season when they meet McNeese at 7 p.m., Friday, inside H&PE Arena.
From there, Houston heads to Lynchburg, Va., to compete in the Paradise Jam on Nov. 17-19. The Cougars open that tournament at 1:30 p.m., Nov. 17 against Drexel before facing the winner-loser of Mercer-Liberty on Nov. 18. The event concludes on Nov. 19.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, but damage from Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria forced it to move locations.
