** Monday's game against Georgia Southern to open the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer was UH's season opener and the NCAA Division I opener for the entire nation.
** Monday's game was the second earliest start in UH history... The Cougars opened the 2007-08 season on Nov. 9 against Morehead State with an 83-54 win at Hofheinz Pavilion.
** The Cougars fell to 45-19 (.703) all-time in season openers... UH also saw its four-game winning streak in season openers come to and end... Prior to Monday's loss, UH had not lost its opening game since a 65-51 setback to East Tennessee State in Houston on Nov. 21, 2003.
** This marks the first time that the Cougars have competed at the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.
** The Cougars will face Presbyterian at 5 p.m. (CST), Tuesday, in the consolation game of the Durham Regional... The Blue Hose dropped an 80-49 decision to host No. 8/5 Duke later Monday evening.
** The Cougars converted 59.3 percent (16-of-27) of their free throws in Monday's loss to Georgia Southern... That was the Cougars' lowest free-throw percentage (min. 10 attempts) since hitting 50.0 percent (5-of-10) against Saint Louis on Jan. 29, 2007.
** With 13 points and 13 rebounds, senior center Marcus Cousin recorded the first double-double of his career.
** With 13 points, senior center Marcus Cousin set a personal high... His total topped his previous high of 10 points, done three times and most recently vs. Toledo (Dec. 4, 2007).
** With 13 rebounds, senior center Marcus Cousin set a personal best in that category... His total bested his previous high of 10 rebounds set against Morehead State (Nov. 9, 2007) during the first game of his UH career.
** Junior guard Aubrey Coleman made his first start as a Cougar in Monday's game.
** With Monday's loss, head coach Tom Penders fell to 608-411 (.597) during his career... Penders also fell to 81-50 (.618) during his UH tenure.
** Monday's game was the first time that Penders faced Georgia Southern during his career.
** Following Monday's loss, Penders now has posted a 24-11 (.686) all-time record in season openers during his career.
** With Monday's loss, Penders saw his own seven-game winning streak in season openers snapped... His teams had not dropped a season opener since a 62-56 loss to Princeton during the Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Classic on Nov. 11, 1997, in East Rutherford, N.J., during his final season at Texas.
** According to the best records, Penders has posted a 44-43 (.506) all-time record during regular-season tournaments... Results from his three-year stint at Tufts (1971-74) were incomplete... In addition, Penders has posted a 5-6 (.455) record during regular-season tournaments at UH.
** Monday's loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Penders' teams in regular-season tournament games ... After falling to VCU in the opening round of the 2007 ESPN Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Cougars posted back-to-back wins over Marist and College of Charleston.
