SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Oliver Lafayette's 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted Houston to a 102-99 overtime win over Rhode Island on Monday night.

Houston overcame a 90-86 deficit with less than 15 seconds to play in regulation to help Houston coach Tom Penders to a win over his former team.

Robert Lee's putback knotted the score at 90-90 with one second to play. Robert McKiver had made it a 90-88 game with a pair of foul shots.

McKiver, who led Houston with a game-high 33 points, hit a foul shot with 30 seconds to play in overtime to give his team a 99-97 lead. Rhode Island's Jimmy Baron answered with a jumper that tied the game with 16.8 seconds to play.

After a timeout, Lafayette dribbled out the clock and launched the game-winning three-pointer from the right wing. Marcus Malone scored 25 points for Houston.

Kahiem Seawright had 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for Rhode Island. Baron added 19 points and Parfait Bitee finished with 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Houston hit 18-of-38 attempts on 3-pointers in the game.

Penders coached at URI 1986-1988.
