HOUSTON - Senior forward Maurice McNeil recorded his second straight double-double, and senior guard Adam Brown scored 20+ points for the second straight game to lead the University of Houston men's basketball team to an 88-68 win against Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
After battling to a 35-35 draw at halftime, the two teams continued to trade punches early in the second half. However, with the score knotted at 42-42, the Cougars used a 19-6 run during an 8-minute stretch to build a double-digit lead they would never relinquish.
Houston converted 65.5 percent (19-of-29) of its second-half shots while limiting the Braves to only 34.4 percent from the field during the final 20 minutes. After being outrebounded in the first half, the Cougars also came out of the locker to outboard the Braves 24-13 in the final period.
The Cougars looked to seize control of the game early, scoring the first nine points, but Alcorn State chipped away and eventually grabbed a 32-31 lead late in the first half. However, that would only time the scoreboard would appear in favor of the Braves.
