HOUSTON HEAD COACH James Dickey
"I'm really happy with the win. Coach [Gene] Rushing does a wonderful job with his team. We had trouble filling that last game, and we were able to work them in. I appreciate him cooperating with us. They outplayed us the first five minutes of the game and the first five minutes of the second half. It was disappointing. In free throws, we got to the line 39 times, and we didn't shoot a very good percentage. We gave up too many points, so we have to get better defensively.
The positive is that we had a good balance. The one thing that jumps out about this team is our strength in numbers right now. We have a lot of guys that can play, and a lot of guys that can do different things, so the team chemistry is extremely important. It has to be about us, not I.
At times tonight we didn't have enough physicality, but we did a lot of things right. We shared the ball well, we didn't turn the ball over a lot, we didn't take too many three's and we had some guys come in and play really well. Joe Young is continuing to play well for us. He had five assists. Tione Womack came in and played much better. TaShawn Thomas didn't shoot a high percent and was not as physical as we want him to be. He has to finish the basket, but he ran the floor extremely well. Leon Gibson is carrying a sore hip right now. He's not moving well and not getting up and down the floor like we want him to. Danuel House did a great job driving the ball. He got to the free throw line 11 times tonight. We have to improve on free throws."
On the improvement in rebounding
"I wish we hadn't given up double figures in offensive rebounds, but we won the war of the boards. We always like to keep them at 10 or less, but we went to the boards well on offense. We need that third rebounder the way we are playing transition defense. Most of the time that's either Danuel [House] or Jherrod [Stiggers]. They have to attack that offensive glass."
On equally competitive offensive and defensive rebounding
"We played even to start the second half. The guys knew that we were the better team, and we were going to win the game. We had to play against ourselves. They can score, shoot the ball, run good offense and use good spacing. There were a few guys we left wide open."
On six players with double digits
"We had good balance and did a good job sharing the ball. We have a lot of guys who can play. I don't care about anything but one stat and that's to get the W at the end of the day. Having said that, we know that rebounding is important and we can't turn the ball over, but the most important thing is that the Cougars win. It has to be about us. We have really outstanding young men that are quality people. We have to keep our focus right on what is important, and what is important is that we encourage each other, not worry about playing time, the number of shots an individual takes and to remain positive."
On the depth of the team
"We have confidence in our guys. We want to keep them fresh, but also push them. There is a lot of strength in on our team. We have to practice well everyday and bring our A-game every night."
