HOUSTON - The University of Houston men's basketball team defeated the Texas Southern Tigers Wednesday night, 73-66, at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Freshman guard Brockeith Pane led the Cougars with a game-high 20 points as UH improved to a 4-1 season record. Senior Dion Dowell added a team-high 11 rebounds and senior guard Robert McKiver and freshman Zamal Nixon added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Houston struggled to keep the lead as TSU trailed by only a few points and both teams left the court at the end of the first half with a score of 28-27.
As the second half ensued it was clear the Cougars were out to win. With only 15 rebounds to the Tigers 33 in the first half, UH quickly changed the pace and grabbed the first three rebounds to open the second half. Shooting percentage was a challenge for Houston offense as they shot 29.6 percent from the field but improved dramatically shooting over 50 percent in the final twenty minutes.
The Cougars ended the game shooting 66.7 percent from the free-throw line helping the team to break away to as much as a 13 point lead and never looked back.
TSU was led by David Burrell and Sollie Norwoord. The two had 19 and 18 points, respectively, to lead the Tigers.
With a win Houston moves to 4-2 in the all-time series against the Tigers, 3-1 in the last four contests.
Houston returns home to face Grambling State on Nov. 24th at 8pm. The match-up concludes a Cougar Athletics double-header as the UH football team finishes the 2007 regular season with a 2:30 pm football game against Texas Southern.
