HOUSTON (AP) - Despite 25 points by Andre Owens and 21 points by Louis Truscott, the University of Houston men's basketball team couldn't overcome some key baskets down the stretch as Prairie View A&M upset the Cougars, 78-75, in Hofhienz Pavilion.

Houston (0-1) led 40-34 at halftime and built an 11-point lead just 1:37 into the second half.

But Prairie View A&M scored 11 straight points and went on a 23-9 run to take a 62-59 lead with 8:08 remaining.

The two teams fought back and forth the rest of the way until Gregory Burks hit two free throws and Kevin Cooper added a three-pointer from the left corner with 2:16 left to give Prairie View A&M a 75-69 lead.

Truscott hit a a lay-up and Anwar Ferguson made two free throws with 40 seconds left to pull Houston to within 76-75. But, Burks floated in a shot from the free throw line with 13 seconds left to give the Panthers a 78-75 lead.

Bryan Shelton's desperation three-point attempt from the right side of the key missed giving the Panther's the victory.

"I believe this was the biggest victory in the history of our program," said Prairie View A&M head coach Jerome Francis, who made his head coaching debut after serving the last two season as an assistant coach at Houston.

Blannon Campbell led the Panthers with 16 points and was one of four Prairie View A&M players to score in double figures. Burks added 15 points, Malachi Thurston had 13 and Roderick Riley added 12 off the bench.

Houston will look to even its record when the Cougars travel across town to play inner city rival Rice University on November 27. UH faces former Southwest Conference foe Baylor in the Space City Classic at Reliant Stadium on November 30 before returning home to play host to UTEP on December 4 at 7:30 p.m.
