Last Second Trey Lifts Baylor To A 62-60 Victory Over Houston

HOUSTON (AP) - Terrance Thomas hit a 30-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer for his only points of the game to lift Baylor to a 62-60 victory over Houston on Saturday night in the final game of the Space City Classic. Thomas, who missed his first five shots, hit his game-winning shot after Andre Owens missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 5.4 seconds left. Carlton Dotson grabbed the rebounds and passed the ball up court to Thomas. Then, Thomas quickly raced down the court and lined up his trey. Houston had taken a 60-57 lead when Dwight Jones scored his only points on a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left. Baylor's Kenny Taylor missed a three-point shot with 28 seconds left, and R.T.Guinn grabbed the offensive rebound. He missed a follow lay-up and Houston's Louis Truscott grabbed the rebound for the Cougars. But, Truscott's outlet pass was stolen by Taylor, who hit Guinn on the right baseline. Guinn tried to shoot another lay-up, but Houston's Jeremee McGuire fouled him. Guinn made both free throws to pull the Bears to within 60-59 with nine seconds left. The Bears were forced to foul Owens, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one to set up the game-winning shot by Thomas.
The victory give Baylor a 3-0 record, while Houston fell to 0-3 despite leading most of the game and held a 41-29 rebounding advantage. The Cougars also shot 47 percent from the field and held the Bears to just 36.2 percent shooting overall. But, the Bears made 10 of their 27 three-point shots, while Houston connected on just seven of its three-point tries. Baylor also made 10 of their 12 free throws compared to Houston hitting just one of its free throw attempts.
Louis Truscott scored 16 points, while McGuire and Owens added 14 points each for Houston.
The game capped a triple header in the first college games at Houston's Reliant Stadium. The Cougars will be looking for their first win of the season on Wednesday, December 4 when they play host to UTEP at Hofheinz Pavilion. |
