Men's Basketball vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Postgame Quotes

Nov. 30, 2013

Recap |  Final Stats

Opening Statement
"Willis (Wilson) is a good friend of mine. He's an outstanding coach and does a great job. He's had some people injured. He's getting them back healthy. (Jeff) Beverly had a nice game. We knew he could shoot the ball so well. He played with great confidence. They had three guys in double-figures. They did a good job.

"We had some adverse situations that we needed to respond to. We didn't play well against (Texas) Tech in New York. We played hard against Stanford, and then we had a hangover against Tech, so I was concerned. We had two good practices since we got back, but I was concerned about this game with not having Danuel (House) in uniform, and how we were going to respond to that.

"They did a nice job. We weren't very efficient in the first half. We got down and didn't have a lot of energy. We finally got it going with our defense in the second half. Some of the guys off the bench really helped us. Danrad (Knowles) came in and did a terrific job off the bench. That's what we need. That's one of our strengths is numbers.

"Obviously, we got outrebounded. We challenged some guys because Danuel is our second leading rebounder. TaShawn (Thomas) if you would have told me he would only have four rebounds I probably wouldn't have believed that. But, we had three other guys get five, and we haven't done that yet.

"I'm glad we got to the free-throw line 29 times. We shot pretty close to 80 percent, which is where we would like to be. Even though we got to the line 29 times I thought we had a lot more opportunities to drive the ball. I was pleased we got to the free-throw line."

On how the team reacted to not having Danuel House in the lineup
"First of all, you're disappointed for him that he's not in uniform. Secondly, when somebody's not having a good game then other people have to step up. That's why they call it a team. I'm not sure that we handled it as well as I would have liked. We've got to be more assertive defensively, on the boards, taking care of the basketball and playing hard.

On getting to the basket
"We only shot 11 threes, and we ended up scoring 78 points. We only made three threes. I hope our guys will take heed to that. We don't have to stand on the perimeter and shoot threes. You can drive and get to the free throw line."

On the production of senior guard Tione Womack
"Tione is like a start. He's playing really well for us. He made some terrific passes. He had 10 points, six assists and no turnovers, so he's playing really well for us. That's what you expect out of a senior point guard. He comes to work every day, and his biggest quality is that he has a high level motor. That's important."

On Jherrod Stiggers' ability to drive to the basket
"I was pleased, but I would like him to finish better. He had some really good drives. He only got to the line twice, but the more he drives the more he's going to get to the free throw line. I want him to know that there is more to his game that just a three-point shooter. He's got a lot of other ways he can help this team win."

On his play tonight
"I was just trying to bring the energy. We were down two at half, and coach told us to come out hard. Everybody did their job off the bench. We were hungry for a win. We lost two games back-to-back in Brooklyn, so we hungry for this win."

On if he feels comfortable out on the court
"I'm staying comfortable every game and it's exciting."

On the key to the second half turnaround
"Just playing defense, locking in, getting a few steals, getting on fast breaks, finishing in transition; the simple things."

On playing without sophomore guard Danuel House tonight
"It felt different. We were a man short, but we made up for it off the bench and on the court."

On what senior guard Tione Womack brings to the team
"Tione always looks for me in transition, always on a fast break. He brings the intensity on defense and has great leadership. I love playing with him."

On what he gave the team tonight
"I just came off the bench when we were down. I knew I just had to bring the energy, bring defense, make sure everybody was on the same page. I just came out and played with 110% and play my hardest."

On if he is more comfortable this season
"I'm real comfortable because last season I was getting adjusted from JUCO ball to division I. This year I'm fully adapted to it, so it's coming easy."

On playing without sophomore guard Danuel House tonight
"He's a key player to our team, so losing any one of our starters would be a little problem but we all just came together and picked up the slack and made it easier for ourselves. We knew he was going to be out, so everybody knew in their head that we have to pick each other up. Everybody just came in with the same mindset... defense first and let offense come by itself."

On what sophomore guard Danrad Knowles brings to the team
"`Chicken' is a big help. During the summer we had a little connection, we knew on a fast break we were going to look for each other. That's why I like to look for him. He just stresses defenses; he puts the ball on the floor, picks a pop screen and rolls. He's a big help. He can play around the rim and block shots and defend well, so he helps us a lot."
