HOUSTON - University of Houston senior forward Devin Davis poured in a career-high 28 points with 10 rebounds, and junior guard Corey Davis Jr. added a career-high 17 points to lead the Cougars to an impressive 91-65 win over Arkansas inside H&PE Arena on Saturday night.
The Cougars jumped out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back in posting their biggest win in the series against the former Southwest Conference rival. Following the initial outburst, Houston never led by fewer than 11 points the rest of the way and built as much as a 30-point advantage late in the game.
Houston connected on 51.8 percent from the field and limited the Razorbacks to only 34.5 percent in the game while forcing 13 turnovers. The Cougars also outrebounded Arkansas 38-29, the seventh straight game to accomplish that feat and the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Arkansas continued to threaten and moved to within 36-26 after Anton Beard hit a free throw with 3:36 left in the first half. However, the Cougars closed out the half on an 8-3 run to take a 44-29 lead in the locker room at the break.
Devin Davis connected on 10-of-14 points and 7-of-8 from the free throw line for his career day. The Indianapolis native also grabbed 10 boards, including four off the offensive glass, for his team-leading third double-double of the season. He topped his previous career high of 19 points against Morgan State on Nov. 11, 2016.
Making his first start since Nov. 17, Corey Davis Jr. posted his points from the 3-point line, draining 5-of-11 attempts. The Lafayette, La., native also grabbed two rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals.
After being held scoreless in the first half for only the third time in his career, senior guard and American Athletic Conference scoring leader Rob Gray finished with 11 points. It was the 61st straight game in which Gray recorded double-digit points.
Sophomore guard Armoni Brooks added 11 points with three 3-pointers, while senior forward Nura Zanna finished with five points and seven rebounds. Junior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. led all players with nine assists and three steals in the win.
Jaylen Barford and Anton Beard led Arkansas with 13 points apiece, while C.J. Jones came off the bench to post 11 points. Daryl Macon added 10 points, while Daniel Gafford and Dustin Thomas tied for team-high honors with six rebounds each.
