HOUSTON - After leading by as many as 21 points in the second half, the University of Houston men's basketball team had to withstand a three-point barrage to hold on for an 82-79 victory at Texas Southern Tuesday night.

The Cougars led, 68-47, with 13 minutes to play after Patrick Okafor hit a 10-foot jumper on the right baseline. But, the Tigers made eight of their 11 three-point field goals the rest of the way to make things interesting.

Leading TSU's comeback was guard Stephen Hoyer, who finished with a game-high 32 points, made four treys and added a three-point play on a lay-up and free throw before picking up his fifth foul with 49 seconds left.

Before he left the game, Hoyer pulled TSU to within 78-71 with 2:11 left to play. After George Williams made a dunk for Houston to increase UH's lead to 80-71, Akil Butler made a jump shot in the middle of the lane and Donald Hogan banked a three-pointer from the top of the kee to made the score 80-76 with four seconds left to play.

Time passed very slowly the rest of the way as Patrick Okafor was intentionally held by Butler and he made two free throws to increase Houston's lead to 82-76. Then, Michael Sneed banked in another three-pointer with one second left to make the final score 82-79.

Dominic Smith scored 17 points to lead the Cougars. Marcus Oliver and Louis Truscott added 15 points each for the Cougars, while Okafor added 15 points and George Williams netted nine.

The victory was Houston's fourth straight victory and improved the Cougars' record to 4-2 this season. It also marks the first time UH has won four straight games since the 1997-98 campaign when the Cougars began the season with a 7-0 record before ending the year 9-22.

Texas Southern fell to 0-6 on the year.

Houston will be idle until December 14 when the Cougars play Texas Tech at the Compaq Center as part of a basketball doubleheader at 9:00 p.m. Texas A&M and Tulsa will play in the first game at 7:00 p.m.
