Men's Basketball Team Wins Seventh Straight Game With A 67-56 Victory Over Toledo

Robert McKiver, Dion Dowell and Marcus Cousin combined for 43 points to lead the University of Houston to a 67-56 victory over Toledo Tuesday night in Hofheinz Pavilion.

McKiver scored 20 points and grabbed a career-best nine rebounds to lead the Cougars, while Dowell added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. In addition, Cousin equalled his career high of 10 points to go along with his eight rebounds and three blocked shots to help the Cougars win their seventh straight game and improve their record to 8-1 this season. The win also was Houston's ninth straight win at home dating back to last season as the Cougars improved to 6-0 in home games this season.

The Cougars began the game missing three of their first five shots and turned over the ball four times in the first four minutes as Toledo opened up a 13-4 lead.

Houston got back into the game as the Cougars were able to cut Toledo's lead to four, 15-11 with 10:01 left to play in the opening period.

The Cougars took their first lead 21-19 with 6:16 on the clock as Cousin blocked a shot and set up freshman guard Brockeith Pane for a jumper in the lane. Houston never trailed again and led 30-28 at halftime.

The game remained close for the majority of the second half until the Cougars went on an 11-4 run to open up a 60-49 lead with less than two minutes to play.

The run was highlighted by Dowell's two 3-pointers, one of which was set up by a another blocked shot by Cousin. That helped to put the game away as the Cougars made six straight free throws to win the game 67-56.

Houston's bench outscored Toledo's 22-0 and the team shot 80 percent (20-25) at the free throw line.

The Cougars will try for their eighth straight win against Southern University this Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion. The game tips off at 7:05pm.
