HOUSTON - University of Houston junior guard Jherrod Stiggers poured in a career-high 23 points behind six 3-pointers, and junior forward Devonta Pollard recorded his second straight double-double to lead the Cougars to a 71-59 win against Abilene Christian on Saturday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

Stiggers enjoyed the fourth 20-point game of his career but his first this season. The Terrell, Texas, native hit 6-of-10 attempts from behind the arc and added five assists and a pair of rebounds to pace Houston. He topped his previous career high of 22 points at American Athletic Conference rival UCF on March 7, 2014.

Pollard tallied 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field for the first 20-point game of his career to go with a team-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double in 2014-15 and second straight. His point total bested his previous high of 19 points in wins against Morgan State and Murray State earlier this season.

With the win, the Cougars won their second straight game and moved to 4-1 overall this season.

In a game that went back and forth, the Cougars outlasted the Wildcats in the first meeting since the 1967-68 season. Abilene Christian jumped out to a 22-20 lead late in the first half, but the Cougars closed out the opening period on a 13-3 run to build a lead they would never surrender.

The Wildcats continued to battle throughout and moved to within 59-57 when LaDarrien Williams hit a jumper with 5:15 left in the contest. However, as they did in the first half, the Cougars used a solid rally at the end of the half for the final margin of victory.

With the Cougars clinging to a 2-point lead following Williams' basket, Pollard was fouled and hit 1-of-2 free throws to start a 12-2 run to end the half and the game.

Junior guard Eric Weary, Jr., came off the bench to score 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbed four rebounds in the win.

Abilene Christian guard Parker Wentz led the Wildcats with 18 points, thanks to four 3-pointers, while Williams added 15 points with five rebounds. Forward Christian Albright snared a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
