Final Stats

HOUSTON - University of Houston junior guard Corey Davis posted 16 points with five 3-pointers to lead the Cougars to an 88-66 win over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon inside H&PE Arena in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.

Davis scored at least 14 points for the third time in the last four games and used a long-range attack to reach that total. The Lafayette, La., native connected on 5-of-7 from behind the arc and drained his lone free throw attempt to lead the Cougars to their seventh victory in the first eight games to open the season.

Davis was one of five Cougars to reach double-digit points. Senior guard and American Athletic Conference scoring champion Rob Gray led all players with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the line. The Forest City, N.C, native also grabbed four rebounds with two assists and two steals.

It was his fourth 20-point game this season and the 29th of his career and marked his 38th consecutive game with 10+ points.

Junior forward Breaon Brady and senior guard Wes VanBeck posted 10 points apiece, while senior forward Devin Davis added 11 points with a game-high nine rebounds.

The game went back and forth early with Fairfield grabbing a 7-5 lead when Matija Milin drained a 3-pointer with 18:15 left in the opening period.

However, the Cougars erupted on an 18-2 run over the next 5:18 and held a 23-9 lead when VanBeck sank a free throw after draining a trey while being fouled. Houston would not lead by fewer than nine points the rest of the way.

The Stags came out of the locker room at the break on a 12-6 run and moved to within 47-38 after Jerome Segura hit a free throw with 16:34 left.

Fortunately, the Cougars scored eight of the game's next 10 points and weren't threatened again.

Houston shot steady from the field throughout the game and finished at 55.2 percent (32-of-58) while limiting Fairfield to only 41.0 percent, including 31.3 percent in the first half.

The Cougars outrebounded the Stags 40-28 -- the eighth straight game in which they accomplished that feat -- and overcame a barrage of turnovers in the first half to record only four giveaways in the final 20 minutes.

Fairfield guard Tyler Nelson led the Stags with 17 points and three assists, while Jesus Cruz posted 16 points with four rebounds. Segura added 11 points with Milin grabbing a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.

Wednesday's game tipped off at 11 a.m., as part of Education Day. The Cougars and Stags competed in front of nearly 1,000 Houston ISD students from Bobby Shaw Middle School, Lantrip Elementary School, Texas Southern Charter Schools, University of Houston Charter School and South Shaver Elementary School.
