HOUSTON - Andre Owens scored 20 points to lead four players in double digits as the University of Houston men's basketball team held on for a 60-59 win over Texas-Arlington on Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Mavericks had a chance to tie the game near the end of regulation when Mack Callier stepped to the free throw line with only three seconds remaining. However, Callier missed his first free throw attempt and could only pull UTA to within a point after making his second attempt.

Owens was fouled on the inbounds pass and was sent to the free throw line for a 1-and-1. Although Owens missed the attempt, the Mavericks' desperation heave at the buzzer fell short, giving the Cougars (2-3) their second straight win.

UH used steady shooting throughout the game to take the win, hitting 48.1 percent of their shots in the game's first 20 minutes and 50 percent in the final period. UTA was equally hot in the first period, connecting on 14-of-28 shots but was held to 37.0 percent shooting in the second half.

Louis Truscott finished with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Cougars, while Jeremee McGuire and Dwight Jones II added 10 points apiece.

UTA (3-4) was led by Roy Johnson who finished with 15 points. Callier and Keith Howell recorded 14 points apiece for the Mavericks with Josh Daniel grabbing a team-best seven rebounds in the loss.

The two teams battled to a 34-34 tie at the halftime break. UH came out of the locker room and eventually took a 50-44 lead at the 9:26 mark of the second half on Dwight Jones II's jumper. After a UTA timeout, the Mavericks responded with a 14-3 run and grabbed a 58-53 lead on Callier's free throw with only 3:38 remaining in the game.

Following the final media timeout of the game UH regained the lead with a 5-0 run of its own. Jones pulled the Cougars to within three points with 2:59, and the Cougars took advantage of a UTA turnover to knot the game at 58-58 on Bryan Shelton's lone trey of the game with 2:17 remaining.

After UTA's Daniel misfired on a three-pointer, McGuire gave the Cougars the lead for good with a driving layup with 1:31 left in the game. The Mavericks had a chance to tie the game with 43 seconds left, but Donny Beacham missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

The Cougars return to action at 7 p.m. Monday as they face Southwest Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. UH will not return to the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion until Dec. 21 as they play host to San Diego State in a 1 p.m. contest.
