Houston, Texas - In just his second game of the season, sophomore guard Kevin Gaines scored 20 points and handed out four assists to lead the University of Houston to an 89-62 victory over Southwest Texas State at Hofheinz Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars opened the game with two free throws and a dunk by Louis Truscott and opened up a 28-3 lead in the first eight minutes of the game.

"That was one of the best starts that I have ever been associated with," Houston head coach Ray McCallum said. "I was extremely please with our effort today because we came out extremely aggressive and we were a hungry basketball team today."

The Cougars never looked back as they shot 74 percent from the field in the first half after making their first 10 field goal attempts in the game.

Houston finished with four players in double figures, led by Gaines, who scored a career-high 20 points against the Bobcats.

Truscott and Patrick Okafor had 15 points each and Jeremee McGuire also tallied a career-high 11 points off Houston's bench.

The victory improved Houston's record to 5-3 this season and the Cougars have won five of their last six games for the first time since 1997-98.
