HOUSTON - University of Houston senior guard Damyean Dotson led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season to lead the Cougars to a resounding 83-58 win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday evening inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Dotson, who was a 2016 Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team selection, connected on 8-of-13 shots from the field, including 6-of-10 from behind the arc. The Houston native and Jack Yates High product also snared 10 rebounds with three off the offensive glass and tied his career high with three steals.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 8-2 this season and collected their sixth win by at least 25 points in 2016-17.
UTRGV (5-9) buried a pair of 3-pointers to start the game and held a 6-5 lead when Gage Loy sank a trey with 17:06 left in the first half. That would be the last time the Vaqueros would lead.
Houston erupted on a 21-4 run over the next 8:07 and grabbed a 26-10 lead when junior guard Wes VanBeck sank a pair of free throws with just under 10 minutes left in the opening period.
Dotson led four Cougars in double digits. Gray, who was the American Athletic Conference scoring leader entering Saturday's game, buried 6-of-9 shots from the field with a pair of treys and added five rebounds with four assists on the way to 16 points, while senior forward Danrad Knowles connected on all but one of his eight shots from the field for 14 points.
Freshman guard Armoni Brooks added 10 points with five rebounds and a pair of steals in the win.
UTRGV guard Antonio Green led the Vaqueros with 11 points and tied with forward Dan Kimasa for team-high honors with five rebounds.
Following Saturday's game, Cougars continue their homestand when they play host Liberty at 7 p.m., Wednesday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston concludes the homestand when it takes on Harvard at 7 p.m., Friday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Cougars do not leave the city limits again until opening American Athletic Conference play on Dec. 28 against UConn in Hartford, Conn.
