Cougars defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 68-61

HOUSTON - Andre Owens registered 20 points and five rebounds to lead the University of Houston to a 68-61 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night, December 18, at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars won the game despite being out-rebounded 36-18, including 16-2 on the offensive boards by scoring 30 points off 24 turnovers. Houston also shot 56.8 from the field. Owens, whose consecutive starting streak ended at 64 games, scored 20 points for the fifth time in the last six games. He hit five three point shots, including one with 1:08 left to play to put Houston up, 65-58, and seal the victory. Houston scored another big three-point shot down the stretch when Brian Latham banked in one from the right side of the key as the shot clock buzzer went off with 4:11 left to play. Ramon Dyer followed up that trey with a slam dunk after stealing a pass by Southeastern Louisiana's Terry Bryant to give Houston a 59-51 lead. The game also marked the debut of junior college transfer Darrius Brannon, who recorded nine points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 14 minutes. He made all four of his field goal attempts and his only free throw. Brannon also drew the praise of Houston head coach Tom Penders by drawing three charges. Latham was the only other Cougar to score in double figures as he finished the game with 11 points. Lanny Smith also recorded a career-high 10 assists against the Lions. The victory improved Houston's record to 7-3 and 4-0 at home this season. This marks the first time the Cougars have achieved both feats since 1997-98 when the Cougars began the season with a 7-0 record.
