HONOLULU (AP) - Dion Dowell scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the University of Houston men's basketball team to a 68-46 victory over Charlotte in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic on Thursday.
The Cougars, who entered the game second in the country with 12.1 three-pointers made per game, went 12 of 35 from behind the arc.Houston also held the 49ers to 23 percent (14-61) shooting from the field and 16 percent (6-37) shooting behind the three-point arc.
The game was tied, 15-15, with 10 minutes left in the first half before Houston closed out the half with a 16-5 run. Dowell led Houston's rally with six points while Oliver Lafayete and Robert Lee added five points each.
In the second half, Houston extended its lead to as many as 24 points three times.
The victory marks the third time in four outings that Houston has advanced to the semifinals of the Rainbow Classic. Houston won the championship game in 1967, and were runners-up in 1976.
Robert Lee finsihed the game with 17 points,scoring 12 of his 17 points in the final seven minutes of the game. Robert McKiver had 13 and Oliver Lafayette added 11 for Houston which improved its record to 5-3.
E.J. Drayton scored 11 points and DeAngelo Alexander added 10 for Charlotte (3-6). Alexander and Antwon Coleman both grabbed 10 rebounds.
Houston will play Creighton in the semifinals on Friday after the Blue Jays beat Valparaiso, 68-43.
