TAMPA, Fla. - University of Houston junior guard Corey Davis Jr. posted 15 points to lead four Cougars in double digits as the Cougars opened American Athletic Conference play with a 79-60 win over USF inside the Sun Dome on Thursday evening.
Davis connected on a pair of 3-pointers and sank all seven attempts from the free throw line to lead the Cougars to their 10th conference season-opening win in the last 11 years. He was one of nine different Cougars to score in the game.
Sophomore guard Armoni Brooks – who was ranked among the nation’s top-10 leaders in 3-point field goal percentage entering the game – drained four treys in nine tries on the way to 14 points. Senior guard Rob Gray – who is the defending American Athletic Conference scoring champion – was held to 11 points but reached double digit points for the 43rd straight game, while senior forward Devin Davis added 10 points with two rebounds.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in American Athletic Conference play. USF saw its three-game winning streak end and fell to 7-7 overall and 0-1 in American play.
Houston jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first four minutes and never trailed in the game. After the Cougars took a 42-33 lead into the locker room at the break, the Bulls scored the second half’s first two points to trim the Houston advantage to 42-35.
However, that would be as close as the Bulls would get. The Cougars erupted on a 12-0 run and never led by fewer than 16 points the rest of the way.
For the 12th time in 13 games, the Cougars outrebounded their opponent, posting 43 boards against the Bulls’ 35, helping lead to 30 points in the paint.
USF guard Isaiah Brown led all players with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting. David Collins came off the bench to total 15 points with a pair of 3-pointers, while Isaiah Manderson finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
