Houston, Texas - The University of Houston starting backcourt tandem of Lanny Smith and Andre Owens combined for 37 points to lead the Cougars to a 60-52 victory over LSU in Hofheinz Pavilion on Tuesday night.

The Cougars opened the game with a 23-5 lead as Smith scored 11 points and Owens added seven more in the first seven minutes of the game.

"We came out and really guarded these guys," Houston head coach Ray McCallum said. "We took charges, rotated to the ball and had great communication on the floor. It was a great defensive effort."

LSU came into the game with an 8-0 record and averaging over 75 points per game. But the Cougars held the Tigers to a season-low 52 points and 35 percent (17-48) from the field.

"Defense told the story," McCallum said.

The Tigers were able to close to within two points, 49-47, with 5:13 left to play. But, Smith hit two free throws, Ramon Dyer scored a dunk off an offensive rebound and Owens passed to Ferguson for another dunk to put Houston up 55-47 with 3:52 remaining to play.

"You knew that they were going to make a run, but what I am really proud of is that our guys didn't surrender the lead and finished well," McCallum said.

Smith ended the game with a career-high 19 points and Owens added 18 to lead the Cougars. Brandon Bass led LSU with 16 points, while Jaime Lloreda added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Houston went on to win the game, 60-52, and improve its record to 6-3 this season. The win was Houston's fifth straight win, the most since the Cougars began the 1997-98 with a 7-0 record.

UH travels to UL-Lafayette on Saturday before opening its Conference USA schedule against Marquette on January 7.
