Men's Basketball Postgame Quotes vs. Texas State

Dec. 30, 2011

Recap |  Final Stats

HEAD COACH James Dickey
On the first half

"I was really pleased with the way our team prepared. They came out with great energy and intensity. We did a great job early defensively. We built up a 20-point lead, and we got into foul trouble. I didn't do a good job managing the guys during that time. As a result, instead of coming in with a 20-plus lead, it was down to seven. We got caught up worrying about the fouls rather than playing basketball."

On the second half
"They regrouped at halftime and came back out and played an outstanding half until the last couple of minutes. We were a little bit sloppy. We have to shoot free throws better. We turned the ball over too much. In the second half most of our turnovers were self-inflicted. We just burped it up. Those are things we have to eliminate over the next five days getting ready for conference. "

On the team's rebounding
"Rebounding was much better. We got some tough rebounds. I was pleased with the way we dominated the boards. "

On any disappointments
"I was disappointed in the turnovers and disappointed with the free throws even though I was glad we got there 22 times. In the second half, our offensive efficiency was really good. We shot the ball really well. We had a nice balance of inside out."

On stopping Texas State's runs
"We're growing and getting better. The disappointing thing was we had a 13-point turnaround in the first half. In the second half, our guys really battled. They cut the lead to four points in the second half, but our guys really extended it. They played together and showed toughness. We showed a lot more energy, intensity and toughness tonight. That really helped us."

On the production of Joe Young
"Joe is just starting to play terrific. He's getting his confidence back. He was 9-for-12 and probably two of those were ill-advised shots. So when you look at that he was taking really good shots. He was terrific from the 3-point line. He and J.J. and Jonathon have got to quit getting too deep in the paint and getting to the high post area and making bad decisions. That's a tough area for them. They have to read the defense better. We just have to be a little more patient and have better judgment."

On the hustle plays
"We did a great job with points in the paint, points off turnovers and second chance points. We had 38 which was terrific. They had 12 offensive rebounds, but to double them up rebounding wise meant our guys did a really terrific job. We blocked some shots tonight. We gave up a couple layups on the wings, and that gave them momentum in the first half. We covered so much better than we did down in San Marcos. The coaches did a great job with the game plan, and the guys communicated very well. Our defensive awareness was outstanding."

On getting the guys ready for conference
"Our guys' legs were alive tonight. We have to make sure we're alive every night, and bring this energy to the game. What we'll do is try to have a good plan and a light workout tomorrow. We'll come back and have a good workout on Sunday afternoon. We'll have two practices on Monday with a shorter practice on Tuesday. Then we'll get ready to go through our game routine on Wednesday. We're going to be conscious of the fact that this is going to be a long haul. We need to be fresh."

On the holidays
"I want to take this opportunity to wish all our great Cougar fans a Happy New Year."

On the difference in rebounding tonight

"We came in there with more intensity than them, a mindset to beat them to the boards, and to not let them get a second shot."

On starting the second half with intensity
"We were ready for them after we lost to them. We came out in practice yesterday and worked hard. We had three days to prepare so we were ready to play."

On being nervous about the tight score at the end of the first half
"I was very proud of us. We overcame adversity. We didn't take care of the ball in the first half, but we came back and took care of it in the second."

On the difference in his performance tonight
"There really wasn't anything different. I wanted to come out and play defense, to hit shots, and take care of the ball. I turned the ball over a few times in the beginning, but in the second half I took care of the ball."

On upcoming conference play
"No one wants to go into conference with a loss. We came out, played our four games, and won. Like Coach Dickey said, we finished the first part of our season; now it's time for the second."

On the last three practices
"They were very intense."

On the difference in rebounding tonight

"We got more rebounds, and I felt like I could help out. I started the game with that in mind."

On being nervous about the tight score at the end of the first half
"Basketball is a game of runs. We made a big run, but then they made a big run and came back. In the second half, we tried to keep that run going and not let them come back."

On playing at home
"The banners and all the history in this building get us fired up."

On his five blocked shots
"I try to knock down everything. When I know the guards can cover me, I can try to go get the block."

On preparing for upcoming conference play
"It builds our confidence up coming into conference with more wins. Nobody wants to start off conference with a recent loss. These last couple of wins help to build our confidence."

On the last three practices
"Everybody would run, not just the guy that was beat. It was a team thing."

On his play tonight

"I have been missing a lot of shots the last couple of games. Tonight I took my time. I settled down."

On preparing the younger players for conference
"There is going to be better competition, and it will be a much slower game. It's going to be more serious and more physical. There are going to be bigger and better players. We are prepared."
