Rob Gray Named The American PoTW

Jan. 2, 2017

HOUSTON -- After helping lead the Cougars to a pair of conference wins on the road to open the season, University of Houston junior guard Rob Gray was honored as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Gray, who was a Preseason All-American Athletic Conference honoree, averaged 22.5 points per game while hitting 52.8 percent of his shots from the field.

The Forest City, N.C, native led all players with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting in a 62-46 win at UConn. Gray, who is the only Cougar to score 14+ in every game to date this season, added two steals and three rebounds as part of a defensive effort that limited the Huskies to only three field goals and 12 first-half points.

He followed that with a 25-point effort to tie for team-high honors in a 70-56 win at USF on Saturday. In addition to recording his ninth 20-point game of the season, Gray also snared five rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals against the Bulls.

Gray leads the Cougars and is a close second in the American Athletic Conference with 20.4 points per game this season.

Monday's award was the second time Gray was named the league's Player of the Week and the first during the 2016-17 season. He is a five-time member of The American Weekly Honor Roll, including two selections in 2016-17.

Cincinnati's Jarron Cumberland was named the league's Rookie of the Week, while Semi Ojeleye (SMU), Matt Williams (UCF), Markel Crawford (Memphis), Sterling Brown (SMU) and Sterling Taplin (Tulsa) earned places on the Honor Roll.
