Academics a Focus in Preparing Champions for Life

HOUSTON - Houston Athletics continually focuses on building Champions for Life by preparing over 400 student-athletes to become champions in academics, athletics and in the community. Those student-athletes continued their pursuit of the lifelong achievement in the 2015 fall semester, recording the second-best fall GPA, 2.91, in athletic department history.

The number falls just behind the record fall GPA of 2.92 set in the fall of 2012 and the fall of 2013.

With a cumulative GPA of 2.90, Houston student-athletes compiled the second-best cumulative GPA following a fall semester, coming in just behind the record of 2.94 set following the fall of 2013 semester.

Twelve of Houston's 17 sport programs eclipsed the 3.0 mark in cumulative GPA. Softball leads the way at 3.42, followed by Tennis (3.38) and Men's Cross Country (3.29).

Eleven of the 17 sport programs posted a fall semester GPA of at least 3.0 with Softball again leading the way at 3.50 with Tennis (3.43) and Men's Cross Country (3.30) rounding out the top-three sport programs.

Nine student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs during the fall semester: Janae Bottoms (Women's Track & Field), Natasha Burgess (Swimming & Diving), Megan Goe (Soccer), Michael Goodnight (Baseball), Margo McEntire (Soccer), Justin Montemayor (Baseball), Olivia Odell (Volleyball), Katie St. Pierre (Softball) and Megan Thothong (Women's Golf).

In addition to the 14 perfect GPAs, 91 Houston student-athletes were named to the Dean's List by recording a 3.50 GPA or better while passing 12 or more hours.

Women's Golf recorded its best fall semester to date, while Baseball, Men's Basketball and Men's Track & Field all recorded their second-best fall semesters in program history. Houston's Swimming & Diving program also finished with its third-best fall semester GPA.

Women's Golf holds its best cumulative GPA following a fall semester with Men's Golf, Men's Track & Field and Women's Track Field recording their second-best cumulative GPA following a semester. Baseball, Men's Basketball and Tennis each recorded their third-best cumulative GPA following a fall semester.
