HOUSTON - Fresh off an exhilarating overtime win last weekend, the University of Houston men's basketball team will ride a wave of momentum when it meets Conference USA rival UAB at 8 p.m., Wednesday, inside Bartow Arena.
The Cougars enter this week's game on the heels of an 81-76 win in overtime against UTEP last weekend in Hofheinz Pavilion. Houston trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and by four points with less than 50 seconds left in the extra period.
However, junior guard Jonathon Simmons converted an and-1 with 34 seconds left and iced the win with a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to lift the Cougars to the victory. The Houston native finished the night with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting.
Against the Miners, forward TaShawn Thomas and Alandise Harris each posted double-doubles to lead the Cougars. It was Thomas' second straight and team-leading fifth of the season and Harris' first of the year.
This season, Simmons leads the Cougars and ranks ninth in the league with 14.9 points per game. Thomas tops the Cougars and stands seventh in the league with 7.9 rebounds per contest, while redshirt freshman guard Joseph Young is tops on the team with 2.9 assists per game.
