HOUSTON - Fresh off an exhilarating overtime win last weekend, the University of Houston men's basketball team will ride a wave of momentum when it meets Conference USA rival UAB at 8 p.m., Wednesday, inside Bartow Arena.

The Cougars enter this week's game on the heels of an 81-76 win in overtime against UTEP last weekend in Hofheinz Pavilion. Houston trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and by four points with less than 50 seconds left in the extra period.

However, junior guard Jonathon Simmons converted an and-1 with 34 seconds left and iced the win with a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to lift the Cougars to the victory. The Houston native finished the night with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting.

Against the Miners, forward TaShawn Thomas and Alandise Harris each posted double-doubles to lead the Cougars. It was Thomas' second straight and team-leading fifth of the season and Harris' first of the year.

This season, Simmons leads the Cougars and ranks ninth in the league with 14.9 points per game. Thomas tops the Cougars and stands seventh in the league with 7.9 rebounds per contest, while redshirt freshman guard Joseph Young is tops on the team with 2.9 assists per game.

SERIES HISTORY vs. UAB
This marks the 16th straight season the two teams will meet on the hardwood. It will be the lone meeting of the 2011-12 regular season.

UAB owns a 17-5 lead in the all-time series, which began Jan. 11, 1997. The series has been played at least once every season since the 1996-97 campaign when both schools joined Conference USA.

UAB joins Memphis and UTEP as the only current C-USA schools that can boast an all-time winning record against the Cougars.

The Cougars have posted a 1-9 all-time record against the Blazers in Bartow Arena. UAB claimed a 75-66 win against the Cougars on Feb. 20, 2010, during the most recent meeting in Birmingham, Ala.

Houston has not won in Birmingham since an 80-71 decision on Jan. 19, 2002. The Cougars have lost their last five road games to the Blazers.

ABOUT UAB
UAB owns a 7-13 overall record and stands in a tie for ninth place with a 2-5 mark in C-USA games. The Blazers are 4-7 at Bartow Arena this season.

In its most recent action, UAB suffered a 73-66 home loss to East Carolina on Saturday. Against the Pirates, guard Preston Purifoy led the Blazers with 17 points and added three rebounds. Forward Cameron Moore added added 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jekore Tyler finished with 11 points. Quincy Taylor added 10 points and a game-high seven assists.

This season, Moore leads the Blazers with 15.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Jordan Swing ranks second on the team with 11.1 points per contest. Taylor is tops with 3.1 assists per game.

Head coach Mike Davis is in his sixth season at UAB and his 12th season overall. He has posted a 229-149 career record and a 114-70 mark at UAB.

Davis, a 2000 graduate of Thomas Edison, is 3-2 against the Cougars with all five previous meetings coming during his UAB tenure. He previously served as the head coach at Indiana (2000-06)

UP NEXT

Houston returns to Hofheinz Pavilion to play host to crosstown rival Rice at 7 p.m., Feb. 8. That game will be televised live on FOX Sports Net.
