Armoni Brooks Honored by The American

Feb. 12, 2018

HOUSTON – After leading the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program to a pair of home wins last week, sophomore guard Armoni Brooks was honored Monday as the league’s Player of the Week.

Brooks recorded the first two double-doubles of his career in back-to-back games against league-rivals SMU and Tulane inside H&PE Arena last week The Round Rock, Texas, native averaged 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game while leading the Cougars in 3-point field goals (11), 3-point field goal percentage (.588) and steals (3).

He played a key role in a Houston defensive effort that allowed only 50.0 points per game and .350 shooting from the field in both games.

Brooks opened the week with 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. He became the first Cougar to sink 7+ treys in a game since 2017 NBA Draft selection Damyean Dotson made seven against UCF on Feb. 1, 2017.

The McNeil High School product also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, including two offensive boards. He topped his previous high of seven boards against Tulane (Feb. 8, 2017).

On Sunday, Brooks finished with 11 points, thanks to three 3-pointers, and set another personal best with 11 boards in the win.

This was the first Player of the Week honor for Brooks during his career.

Temple’s J.P. Moorman II was named The American Rookie of the Week. A.J. Davis (UCF), Junior Etou (Tulsa), Quinton Rose (Temple), Landry Shamet (Wichita State) and Kyle Washington (Cincinnati) earned places on the league’s Honor Roll.
