Feb. 18, 2013

After a spectacular week of play, University of Houston sophomore forward TaShawn Thomas was honored Monday afternoon as the Conference USA Player of the Week.

Thomas led the Cougars to a 79-61 home win against UTEP on Wednesday before Houston dropped a 101-92 decision in triple-overtime at Tulsa on Saturday. In those two games, he averaged 27.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game while hitting 56.1 percent of his shots from the field.

The Killeen, Texas, native was the Cougars' leader in scoring, rebounding, assists (5.0) and blocks (2.0) and tied for the team lead in steals (2.0). He scored at least 24 points and grabbed at least 11 rebounds in each game last week on the way to his 10th and 11 double-doubles of the season.

Thomas flirted with a triple-double in the Cougars' home win against UTEP, leading the Cougars with a career-high 24 points, 11 rebounds and a personal-best seven assists.

Three days later, he scored a career-high 31 points for his third straight 20-point game and added a game-high 15 rebounds while playing a career-best 50 minutes at Tulsa. Thomas played a key role in a 21-7 run late in the first half and starting the second half, scoring the 11 of the team's 21 points during that rally. He also scored seven of the Cougars' nine points in the first overtime period.

This was the second time this season that Thomas picked up the league's weekly award. Tulsa's D'Andre Wright was honored as the C-USA Freshman of the Week.
