Guy V. Lewis, the coach who put the University of Houston basketball program on the collegiate map, is resting comfortably at Methodist Hospital after suffering what doctors believe are symptoms of a stroke.

Lewis, who will turn 80 years old on March 19, was admitted to Methodist at 2 a.m. this morning and has been under observation since his arrival. According to representatives with the hospital, Lewis is alert and talking and has received several visitors, including a slew of former players, to his room.

Over the next few days Lewis will undergo a series of tests to determine the severity of the symptoms. Because of this, the Lewis family and Methodist doctors will wait until then to comment on Coach Lewis's condition.

The legendary Lewis is the Cougars' all-time leader in wins (592) and winning percentage (.679) and led Houston to the NCAA Tournament 14 times, including five trips to the elusive Final Four. He is the only two-time inductee into the UH Hall of Honor, having been selected as both a player and a coach.
