HOUSTON -- The University of Houston of men's basketball team returns to action at 7 p.m., Wednesday, when the Cougars play host to Conference USA opponent Southern Miss at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Houston enters Wednesday's showdown with the Golden Eagles after enjoying a 71-62 win over crosstown rival Rice last Saturday.

Sophomore guard Kelvin Lewis poured in a career-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers in just 24 minutes. Lewis helped seal the win for UH, sinking 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the game's final minute.

Senior guard Robert McKiver added 18 points, while junior guard DaShaun Williams also scored in double-figures, posting 11 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.

McKiver leads the Cougars with 21.8 points per game and ranks among the national individual leaders with four 3-pointers per game. Senior forward Dion Dowell is Houston's best rebounder, pulling down seven boards per game.

The game marked the Cougars' 20th win of the season, as UH improved to 20-6 and 9-3 in C-USA. Houston is currently in a tie for second place with UAB and is in position to earn a bye in the first round of the 2008 C-USA Championship.

Fans can listen to Wednesday's action live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play and Carl Dukes providing the analysis. The pregame show is scheduled to begin 10 minutes before tip-off.

Houston leads the all-time series against the Golden Eagles, posting a record of 14-12, including wins in eight of the last 11 contests.

Southern Miss enters the midweek matchup with a 15-11 overall record but has won six of its last eight, including each of its last three. The Golden Eagles are currently in a three-way tie for fourth in C-USA with a 7-5 record.

Sophomore guard Jeremy Wise leads Southern Miss with 19 points and 4.2 assists per game. Guards R.L. Horton and Courtney Beasley also are averaging double-figures this season, scoring 12.3 and 11.3 points, respectively.
