HOUSTON - For the fifth time this season, University of Houston senior guard Aubrey Coleman was honored Monday as the Conference USA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Coleman led the Cougars in scoring (32.0 ppg), rebounding (8.5 rpg), steals (2.0 spg) and minutes (40.0 mpg) during a two-game stretch last week that included a win over Memphis.
Against Memphis, Coleman led all players with 34 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds and converted 9-of-10 free throws to help the Cougars defeat the Tigers for the first time in 12 tries.
In the loss at SMU, Coleman led the Cougars with 30 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and no turnovers. He was 8-for-8 behind the charity stripe.
The nation's scoring leader with 25.9 points per game, Coleman played all 40 minutes in both games last week despite being hampered by a severe leg bruise. He has played the game's entirety six times this season.
This was the seventh career C-USA Player of the Week for the Houston native. He was named the league's Rookie of the Week five times a year ago.
Haassan Whiteside of Marshall was named the C-USA Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season. Both players were selected by a media panel representing each conference member for games through March 1.
Houston returns to Hofheinz Pavilion for its last regular-season home game when it squares off against intra-city rival Rice at 7 p.m., Wednesday. Seniors Sean Coleman, Kelvin Lewis and Aubrey Coleman will be honored in a Senior Night ceremony before the game.
The game can be heard live on SportsTalk 790 AM or on the Internet at UHCougars.com with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action. The pregame show is slated to begin at 6:45 p.m.
