Cougars Play Host To Charlotte In Final Home Game In 2003-04
March 2, 2004 Houston, Texas- - The University of Houston men's basketball team plays its final home game of the 2003-04 season when the Cougars play host to Charlotte in a Conference USA game on March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion. The game will also be the final home game for a pair of seniors on this year's team, Anwar Ferguson and Marcus Oliver. Ferguson is a two-year letterman from Lee College in Baytown, Texas. He has played in 53 games and will make his 40th start Wednesday night for the Cougars. He and Andre Owens are the only two players on this year's team to start every game. Ferguson ranks second nationally and leads Conference USA in blocked shots with 4.1 per game. He also is seventh among Conference USA leaders in rebounding with 7.2 per game and averages 7.5 points per contest. Oliver is the only four-year senior on the team and has played in 117 games during his career. He will start his 70th game as a Cougar against Charlotte and needs to score nine points to reach the 800-point plateau. Oliver is averaging 9.9 point per game this season and has is coming off a 15-point performance at TCU. The Cougars enters Charlotte game with a 9-16 overall record and a 3-11 Conference USA mark after suffering an 71-65 loss at TCU, last Saturday in Fort Worth. The loss was Houston's fifth in the last six games. Charlotte enters the game with an 18-7 overall record and a 10-4 C-USA mark after falling 75-67 against Cincinnati last Saturday in Charlotte. A lot rides on the outcome the game because the result could determine whether Houston participates in the Kelly Tires Conference USA Tournament on March 10-13. The Cougars enter the game one game back of Tulane and East Carolina in the C-USA standings. Tulane and East Carolina are tied for 11th place with 4-10 records. Houston holds a 3-11 mark in league play and ends the regular season at Saint Louis on Friday night.
East Carolina plays at Marquette on Wednesday and at Southern Miss on Saturday. Tulane plays at Southern Miss Wednesday and at Charlotte on Saturday.
