Joseph Young, TaShawn Thomas Named to C-USA Men's Basketball All-Freshmen Team
March 6, 2012
HOUSTON - For their impressive work throughout their first collegiate seasons, University of Houston redshirt guard Joseph Young and forward TaShawn Thomas were honored Tuesday with places on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Young ranks third on the team with 11.4 points per game and has established himself as one of the league's premier 3-point shooters. The Houston native and Yates High product ranks second in the league, hitting 40.4 percent of his 3-point shots, and stands seventh in the league with just less than two 3-pointers made per game. He posted a career-high 27 points with four 3-pointers in a home win against SMU, becoming the fifth Cougar player to score 20 points in a game this season. Young joined junior guard Jonathon Simmons, sophomore forward Alandise Harris, junior forward Kirk Van Slyke and senior guard Darian Thibodeaux. Thomas ranks among the league leaders in rebounds, field goal percentage and blocks and tops the Cougars and all C-USA freshmen with eight double-doubles this season. The Killeen, Texas, native was twice named a C-USA Freshman of the Week recipient and posted three straight double-doubles in games against East Carolina, UTEP and at UAB. UP NEXT Young, Thomas and their Cougar teammates return to action at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, when they open play in the Conference USA Championship First Round at FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. The two teams split the regular-season series with each squad winning on its home court. In the most recent action, the Cougars rallied for an 81-76 win in overtime inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Jan. 28.
