Zamal Nixon Named to Conference USA All-Defensive Team

EL PASO, Texas - Ranked among the Conference USA leaders in steals all season, University of Houston senior guard Zamal Nixon was named to the league's All-Defensive Team on Tuesday.

After recording three steals in the season-opening win against Nicholls State on Nov. 12, Nixon has led the Cougars and ranked among the league leaders in that category throughout the season.

Nixon enters the 2011 Buick Conference USA Championship third in the league with 1.8 steals per game and has recorded at least three steals in eight games this season, including a career-high five thefts against Nevada (Dec. 6) and Alcorn State (Nov. 14).

It was the first All-Defensive Team honor for Nixon during his career.

Nixon was joined on the senior-laden All-Defensive Team by SMU forward Papa Dai, Southern Miss guard Sai'Quon Stone, UAB guard Aaron Johnson and UTEP guard Julyan Stone.

Nixon and his Cougar teammates open play at the 2011 Buick Conference USA Championship when they meet No. 6 seed Marshall at 6:30 p.m.(CST)/5:30 p.m. (MST), Wednesday, inside the Don Haskins Center in El Paso,Texas.

Marshall escaped with a 63-62 win against the Cougars onFeb. 1 inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

With a win against the Herd, the Cougars will take on No. 3 seed and host UTEP at 6:30 p.m. (CST)/5:30 p.m. (MST), Thursday, in the C-USA Championship quarterfinals.
