Danuel House Named Conference USA Men's Hoops Freshman of the Year
March 12, 2013
TULSA, Okla. - University of Houston forward Danuel House added another award to his trophy case Tuesday morning when he was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year. House, who also earned a place on the league's five-man All-Freshman Team, was one of two Cougars to receive specialty awards Tuesday. Sophomore forward TaShawn Thomas was named to the C-USA All-Defensive Team. House entered his first collegiate season as a highly recruited prep star and has more than lived up to those expectations. The Hightower High product ranks third on the team with 12.4 points per game and stands among the C-USA freshman leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, assists and steals. House was a three-time C-USA Freshman of the Week recipient and enjoyed five 20-point games this season, including a career-high 28 points against SMU on Jan. 9. A versatile athlete, he flirted with a triple-double with 15 points, 11 assists and six assists against UCF on Jan. 19 and has started each of the last 18 contests. While the Cougars have enjoyed several conference Newcomers of the Year and conference All-Freshman Team members during their proud history, House is the first Freshman of the Year in any league in school history. This marks the second straight season that a Houston freshman was named to the league's All-Freshman Team. A year ago, forward TaShawn Thomas and guard Joseph Young were named to the postseason squad. One day after being named to the All-Conference USA First Team for the first time in his career, Thomas earned a place on the league's All-Defensive Team. The Killeen, Texas, native leads the Cougars and ranks second in the league with 9.4 rebounds per game.
Thomas tops all players in Conference USA with 6.7 defensive rebounds per contest and leads the Cougars with 1.8 blocks per game, good enough for sixth in the league. This was his first All-Defensive Team honor. He became the first Cougar named to an All-Defensive Team since Zamal Nixon in 2011 and only the third since 1995. UP NEXT House, Thomas and their Cougar teammates return to action at 6 p.m., Wednesday, when they meet No. 11 seed Rice in the Conference USA Championship First Round inside the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
