HOUSTON – University of Houston Men’s Basketball guards Rob Gray and Damyean Dotson added to their trophy cases Tuesday morning when they were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 25 Second Team.
Earlier this month, both student-athletes were named to the All-American Athletic Conference First Team, making Houston the only school with two First-Team picks. The duo became the first Cougar teammates to be named to an All-Conference First Team since Carl Herrera and Craig Upchurch were selected by the Southwest Conference in 1990.
This was the first NABC postseason honor for either player.
Dotson was a steady performer during the last two years and was the only Cougar to start every game during that time. For the second straight year, he established himself as one of the league’s top all-around players and was one of only two to rank among The American’s top-10 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
Dotson, who prepped at Houston’s Jack Yates High School, averaged 17.4 points per game to rank fourth in the league and stands 10th with 7.0 rebounds per contest.
In addition, he drained at least one 3-pointer in all 32 games in 2016-17 to set a Houston record. With his basket late in the second half against Akron on Wednesday during the NIT First Round, Dotson joined Gray in the Cougars’ 1,000-Point Club, becoming the 47th player in school history to reach that total.
Gray was a leading offensive force for the Cougars in 2016-17. The Forest City, N.C., native leads the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference with 20.6 points per game and is poised to become Houston’s first conference scoring champion since Aubrey Coleman in 2009-10.
Gray was the only Cougar to score at least 12 points in every game in which he competed in 2016-17 and led the Cougars with 18 20-point games. With his basket midway through the second half against East Carolina in the final game inside Hofheinz Pavilion on March 5, Gray joined the Cougars’ 1,000-Point Club, becoming the 46th player in Houston history to reach that milestone.
Gray also was named to the United States Basketball Writers Association All-District VII Team.
Gray and Dotson were joined on the Second Team by SMU’s Shake Milton and Sterling Brown and Cincinnati’s Jacob Evans.
Dedric Lawson (Memphis), Semi Ojeleye (SMU), Kyle Washington (Cincinnati), Jalen Adams (UConn) and Troy Caupain (Cincinnati) were named to the District’s First Team.
