HOUSTON – Following one of the most successful campaigns in decades, the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program finished among the nation’s top 25 in both national polls on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars, who finished the season with a 27-8 overall record and tied for second in the American Athletic Conference with a 14-4 mark, received 149 points to rank No. 22 in the final USA TODAY Coaches’ poll. Houston earned 430 points to come in at No. 21 in the final Associated Press poll, released March 12.
This marked the first time since 1984 that the Cougars finished a season ranked among the Top 25 in a national poll and was only the 10th time in school history.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Under the leadership of 2017-18 American Athletic Conference and NABC District 25 Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars received at at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and earned their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1984 in a thrilling 67-65 win over San Diego State.
The Cougars fell just a buzzer-beater away from advancing to the Sweet 16 in a loss to eventual NCAA National Championship Game finalist Michigan.
Sophomore guard Armoni Brooks was honored as the American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year, while senior guard Rob Gray was a First-Team performer by the American Athletic Conference, NABC District 25 and USBWA District VII. Freshman forward Fabian White Jr. earned a place on the league’s All-Rookie Team.
When the Cougars open their 2018-19 home season, they will do so riding one of the nation’s longest home winning streaks. Houston enjoyed a perfect 15-0 record inside H&PE Arena on the campus of nearby Texas Southern University with victories over Top-10 opponents Cincinnati and Wichita State.
