LeRon Barnes Signs with Men's Basketball

HOUSTON - Louisiana's North DeSoto High star LeRon Barnes will join the University of Houston men's basketball program in 2011-12 after signing a National Letter of Intent, head coach James Dickey announced Thursday afternoon.

"We are thrilled to have LeRon at the University of Houston," Dickey said. "LeRon is an outstanding young man, who is a talented and versatile player. He is very skilled and can play multiple positions."

As a senior in 2010-11, Barnes led the Shreveport-Bossier City area with 33.0 points per game. The 6-foot-6, 195-pound player also posted 10.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.8 blocks per game to earn a place on the Class 3A All-State First Team by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.

Barnes enjoyed four games in which he scored at least 40 points as a senior for head coach Stephen Burch. He was named the All-Area Most Valuable Player and earned his place on the All-District 1-3A First Team

He earned Athlete of the Week honors from local television stations KTBS and KSLA and played in the Louisiana High School All-Star Game. Barnes also was a finalist for McDonald's All-America honors.

He considered offers from Providence, Colorado State, Tulane, South Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette before signing with Houston.

Barnes became the sixth player in the Cougars' signing class and the first in the spring period. Junior forward Jonathon Simmons (Houston, Texas/Midland JC), freshman guard Jherrod Stiggers (Terrell, Texas/Terrell HS, freshman forward TaShawn Thomas (Killeen, Texas/Killeen HS) and freshman point guard J.J. Thompson (Irving, Texas/Irving HS) signed with Houston in the fall.

That group will join redshirt redshirt freshman guard and Yates High star Joseph Young, who sat out the 2010-11 season with the Cougars. Young will have four years of eligibility remaining in 2011-12.
