Houston, Texas- - University of Houston head basketball coach Tom Penders announced that Rodney Hannah and Chris Lawson have signed to play for the Cougars in 2004-05.

Hannah is a 6-8, 240 pound forward comes to Houston from Yuba College in Marysville, Calif. He was named a First-Team, All-Bay Valley Conference selection after averaging 13.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.

Hannah also helped Yuba enjoy its best season in school history when the school advanced to the Elite Eight of the California Junior College Tournament and finish the 2003-04 season with a 24-7 overall record.

"Rodney Hannah is a tremendous athlete who is chiseled to say the least," Penders said. "He has a 36" vertical jump and can outrun most guards on any team. He will definitely have a chance to play right away. He has a great attitude and work ethic and is very coachable."

Lawson is a 6-4, 210 pound guard who comes to Houston after earning First-Team, All-South Coast South Conference honors. He averaged 16.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.3 steals in eight conference games. Southwest Los Angeles also finished the season with a perfect 8-0 conference record and a 22-8 overall mark.

Lawson averaged 17.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and two steals per game overall.

"Chris Lawson is a impact player who should contend for a starting position as a point guard or on the wing," Penders said. "He is player from Chicago who shows some toughness and confidence on the floor. He reminds me of Travis Mays and is one of the best guards I have ever recruited. He had great savvy for the game, and is fundamentally sound and a well coached player."

Lawson is a Chicago native who earned All-City honors after averaging 18 points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals per game at Harlan High school. Washington State, Fresno State, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Wyoming also recruited him.

Hannah and Lawson join two other junior college transfers, Englebert Cherrington and Brian Latham from Midland College as players who have signed with the Cougars this spring.
