HOUSTON - Forward Jonathon Simmons became the newest member of the University of Houston men's basketball team with his signing of a National Letter of Intent, head coach James Dickey announced Wednesday.

Simmons, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward, will join the Cougars after playing at Midland Junior College for head coach Ross Hodge. He will compete as a junior for the Cougars during the 2010-11 season.

A Houston native, Simmons prepped at Smiley High School and was an All-District 21-4A Second-Team honoree as a junior in 2006-07. In two years as a junior college player, he helped lead Midland and Paris colleges to a combined 57-8 record.

With an award-winning background at the high school and junior college levels, Dickey could not have been more pleased with his first Cougar signee.

"We are so excited about Jonathon joining our program. He is a talented athlete who has been extremely successful in junior college," Dickey said. "Jonathan is someone who can score, defend, rebound and brings experience and toughness to our program. He is a competitor and is the type of young man we want in our program."

As a sophomore at Midland College in 2009-10, Simmons averaged 13.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55 percent from the field. Following the season, he was named to the WACJAC All-Conference and Region 5 All-Conference teams.

He helped lead the Chaparrals to a 26-0 start and a berth in the Regional finals and was rated as the No. 19 player in the country by JucoJunction.com. In addition, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas.

Simmons competed as a freshman at Paris Junior College during the 2008-09 season, averaging 12.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game while hitting 56 percent from the field, including 45 percent from behind the 3-point line. For his impressive efforts, he earned All-Conference honors.

He helped lead the team to a No. 6 national ranking, the Region 14 North championship and a berth in the Regional finals.

Simmons became the first signee of Dickey, who joined the Cougar program in early April.
