May 15, 2014

HOUSTON - San Jacinto Junior College forward Egi Gjikondi joined the University of Houston Men's Basketball program after signing a National Letter of Intent, head coach Kelvin Sampson announced Thursday afternoon.

At 6-foot-9 and 240 pounds, Gjikondi checks in as the Cougars' biggest signee. He joins the Cougars after competing during the 2013-14 season as a redshirt freshman at San Jacinto Junior College for head coach Scott Gernander and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

"Egi is a tough, hard-nosed kid who will fit into what we want our program to embody. With three years left, we can work hard with him to develop," Sampson said. "He has a great attitude and work ethic. While he has work to do in some areas, I love the way he works and how hard he plays."

In 2013-14, Gjikondi competed in 29 games and helped lead the Ravens to a 23-8 overall record. He averaged 5.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while hitting nearly 49 percent of his shots from the field.

Gjikondi, whose name is pronounced Egg-E Juh-KON-Dee, scored 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds in a win against Houston Community College in late November and added 10 points with six rebounds in a big win against Bossier Parish Community College in mid-December.

After prepping at Malden High in his hometown of Malden, Mass., in 2011, Gjikondi attended Alabama State during the 2012-13 season but did not compete or practice with the team.

Gjikondi becomes the sixth newcomer to compete during the 2014-15 season. He joins junior guards Chuck Baker Lee JC), Eric Weary, Jr. (Howard JC) and Torian Graham (Chipola JC) and freshman forward J.C. Washington (Yates High). Former Purdue guard Ronnie Johnson will sit out the 2014-15 season and play as a junior in 2015-16 with two years of eligibility remaining.
