AUSTIN, Texas - Former University of Houston coaching legend Guy V. Lewis will be honored with a proclamation by the Texas State House of Representatives and Senate Friday at the Capitol Building in Austin. Former UH standout and newly-appointed Cougar assistant basketball coach Michael Young will be on hand to accept a draft for Coach Lewis.

Among those involved in presenting the honor is local state Rep. Rob Eissler (The Woodlands). The presentation will begin at 10 a.m. on the floor of the Texas House and Texas Senate.

After accepting the draft in Austin, Young will deliver the proclamation to Coach Lewis in his Houston home later Friday afternoon

Lewis, who served as Houston's head coach for 30 seasons, retired with a 592-279 record and led the Cougars to five NCAA Final Four appearances in his career. In addition to coaching Young, Lewis tutored NBA greats Elvin Hayes, Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon and was a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2003.

Young was named assistant men's basketball coach by head coach Ray McCallum on April 29 after serving as a strength and conditioning coach here for five seasons.

Young played four seasons (1980-84) for the legendary Lewis, was a member of the notorious 'Phi Slama Jama' and helped Lewis to reach three consecutive Final Fours.
