HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men’s Basketball program ranked among the nation’s top-20 leaders in attendance improvement for the 2015-16 season.
Under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars, who finished 22-10 and competed in the NIT for the first time in a decade, welcomed an average of 3,705 fans per game into Hofheinz Pavilion in 2015-16. That was an improvement of 1,071 fans per game in 2014-15, ranking 20th among all NCAA Division I schools.
With only the 15th 22-win season in school history, the Cougars boasted a 9-game improvement from their 13-19 mark in 2014-15. That total ranked as the 13th-highest improvement among 351 NCAA Division I schools in 2015-16.
7,918 fans poured into Hofheinz Pavilion to watch the Cougars take a 105-98 win against SEC foe LSU on Dec. 13. It was the largest home crowd since 8,918 fans saw the Cougars fall to No. 1 Memphis on Jan. 30, 2008.
In February, 6,195 fans watched Houston knock off No. 12 SMU in Hofheinz Pavilion as the Cougars defeated their highest-ranked opponent since a 69-67 win over No. 3 Memphis.
The Cougars return three starters, including All-Conference honoree and Yates High School product Damyean Dotson and All-Rookie Team member Galen Robinson, Jr., and welcome four newcomers to the program during the 2016-17 season.
Houston was one of only two teams in the league who defeated every American Athletic Conference rival at least once during the regular season.
The Cougars recently learned their American Athletic Conference pairings for the 2016-17 season. Houston and 10 league members will play an 18-game schedule in 2016-17. Each team will play eight of its 10 opponents twice and the two remaining rivals once each – one at home and one on the road.
Houston will face Cincinnati, East Carolina, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UConn and USF in home and away contests. The Cougars will face Temple inside Hofheinz Pavilion while competing against USF in Tampa, Fla., only.
The complete 2016-17 American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball schedule with dates and times will be announced at a later date. The Cougars will release their non-conference schedule, which is expected to feature, eight home games inside Hofheinz Pavilion, in the near future.
