BROOKLYN, N.Y. – University of Houston guard Damyean Dotson was selected by the New York Knicks in the Second Round of Thursday’s NBA Draft inside the Barclays Center.
Dotson was taken with the No. 44 pick overall. He became the first Cougar to be selected in the NBA Draft since Alton Ford was taken in the Second Round with the No. 50 overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in 2001.
It was the highest a Cougar was selected in the NBA Draft since Alvaro Teheran was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 44 pick in the Second Round in 1991.
Dotson also became the first Cougar to be taken by the New York Knicks.
ABOUT Damyean Dotson
Dotson was a steady performer for Houston during the last two years and was the only Cougar to start every game during that time. For the second straight year, he established himself as one of the league’s top all-around players and was one of only two to rank among the American Athletic Conference’s top-10 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
He joined with junior guard Rob Gray on the All-American Athletic Conference First Team, making Houston the only school with two First-Team picks. The duo became the first Cougar teammates to be named to an All-Conference First Team since Carl Herrera and Craig Upchurch were selected by the Southwest Conference in 1990.
He also was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 25 Second Team.
HOUSTON NBA HISTORY
Dotson became the 45th player in school history to be chosen in the NBA Draft. In addition to 44 Men’s Basketball stars, Track and Field legend Carl Lewis was taken in the 10th round of the 1984 Draft by the Chicago Bulls.
Dotson looks to become the 27th Cougar in school history to compete in the NBA. Guard Jonathon Simmons became the most recent Cougar to play in the NBA after signing with the San Antonio Spurs in 2015.
